This project was funded by TFL (Transport for London) and was a large scale scheme to improve air quality in one of the most polluted parts of London. Selbourne Road in Walthamstow has suffered from one of the worst ratings for air purity anywhere in England, this was not surprising when considering the heavy traffic. The scheme aimed to turn this around by changing the priorities of transport methods. Pedestrians are given highest priority, Cyclists are given second priority, then buses and finally cars are given lowest priority. This promotes healthier transport methods.
The scheme included removing a car lane and making it a wide pavement with a rain garden in the centre. Even the paving on the pavement includes a special compound to absorb harmful particles from the air.
Trees and grass was added in the rain garden to further improve things and Viritopia Living Walls have been installed along the face of The Mall shopping centre on the other side of the road. The road itself has had speed ramps added and a bus stop.
