Why is maintenance so important?
Growing plants in a vertical garden is a bit more complex than growing them in the ground. If irrigation is off, drainage is clogged, or pests or disease take hold for too long, large sections of the wall could fail and require costly replacement.

Frequently asked questions

Do you offer maintenance contracts outside of the UK?
Viritopia provides living wall maintenance in London, across the UK, and in select countries. Outside of these countries, we work with trusted partners who maintain our systems to the Viritopia standard. Contact us to enquire about a specific region.
What does maintenance for an outdoor façade entail?
Exterior living wall maintenance includes regular visits (typically monthly) and full plant husbandry services every 6 to 12 months, depending on the wall’s needs. During routine visits, we inspect the plants, check that irrigation is working properly, and carry out any necessary pruning or treatments. For the full husbandry service, our technicians scale the wall from top to bottom, prune in detail, and replace any aging or failed plants. We finish by applying an organic feed to support root development in the year ahead.
What about indoor façades?
Because indoor plants don’t face seasonal changes, interior living walls generally require less intensive horticultural upkeep. As part of our regular visits, our maintenance technicians prune foliage, check irrigation, assess plant health, and replace aged plants to keep the wall tidy and thriving.
What happens if a wall isn’t maintained?
Even though the walls self-irrigate, the plants still need regular care to stay healthy. Without pruning and treating for pests or disease, sections of the wall can become overcrowded, rot, or die off. Neglected walls also pose a greater fire risk if irrigation fails and the system dries out. Proactive care helps avoid costly repairs and keeps the system beautiful, safe, and compliant.
How long will the plants in a living wall last?
Plant lifespan depends on the species. Typically, we allow 3-5 years for herbaceous plants and 5-7 years for shrubs or plants with woodier stems. Our maintenance contract covers plant replacement as needed.
What are the maintenance costs?
Living wall maintenance costs vary based on factors like plant design, location, and accessibility — for example, taller walls may require a scissor lift or scaffold tower. Generally, annual maintenance costs around 6-10% of the wall’s original installation cost. For a more tailored estimate, please reach out and we’d be happy to advise.
