Our journey so far
What began with a simple nursery and has grown into a global mission. From Aldingbourne Nursery Systems (ANS) to today’s Viritopia, every step has been guided by our commitment to sustainability and a belief in the power of nature to transform cities.
1996
Company founded
Aldingbourne Nursery Systems (ANS), founded by Steve McIntyre, set down the roots for what would become a global green infrastructure leader.
2005
Exploring green roofs
We expanded into green roofs, eventually developing GrufeKit — our simple, DIY modular green roof system. This lay the foundations for our future living wall innovation.
2008
ANS Living Wall System ® developed
Years of research led to the launch of our modular living wall system designed to meet rising demand from architects for sustainable urban design.
2009
First major installation
Our breakthrough came at London’s Westfield Shopping Centre, where our first large-scale living wall captured attention and spurred international growth.
2010
Global expansion
ANS Global was established, marking the start of projects across Europe, the Middle East and beyond.
2020
World’s largest living wall
We delivered the 7,000m2 Khalifa Avenue project in Qatar, which remains the world’s largest living wall! Completed with our partner Nakheel Landscapes it stands as a landmark example of what’s possible through true collaboration.
2021
Europe’s tallest living wall
At 40 metres tall, our installation at Dukes Court, Woking, set a European record and proved the potential of retrofitting green infrastructure.
2023
Europe’s largest living wall
Eden New Bailey in Manchester saw 3,000m2 of curved façade transformed with over 350,000 plants. One of our most recognised and awarded projects, it shows how biophilic design can redefine city skylines.
2023
New 10-acre nursery
We opened a new 10-acre nursery in Cavegates, UK, expanding capacity to support larger, more impactful projects.
2024
Rebrand and expansion
We became Viritopia, reaffirming our mission to build with nature for life. With the launch of Viritopia GmbH in Germany, we’re setting the stage for what comes next.
