Outdoor living walls make a meaningful difference

Need to meet regulatory requirements with your next build? Green walls create opportunities out of obstacles, helping your project achieve planning targets and transform into something even greater.

For nature

Our urban spaces often leave nature out of the equation. Living walls can incorporate native plants and habitats for wildlife, restoring biodiversity.

For people

Humans innately seek connection with nature. Proximity to plants reduces stress, improves mood, and supports general well-being.

For buildings

Living façades help achieve BNG, BREEAM, and UGF targets. They also reduce noise from busy streets and protect buildings against weather and pollution.

For cities

Dense vegetation helps cool the immediate environment, reducing the urban heat island effect with a visual landmark that adds to a city’s character.

    Viritopia’s living wall system

With ongoing research and development since 2008, the Viritopia Living Wall System is a durable, sustainable, industry-leading green wall solution. Our modules are engineered to help plants grow strong for unmatched visual impact and environmental benefit.

    Soil substrate

Soil-based living walls offer wins all around. Soil substrate allows for the widest selection of plant species, creates habitats for wildlife such as pollinators, and uses less water than hydroponic green wall systems.

    Modular system

Our modules fit together to create vertical gardens of all shapes and sizes. With 10 plants per module, our living wall system holds 80 plants per m² — a design informed over years of testing for optimal plant health and creative flexibility.

    Efficient irrigation

Because soil retains water more effectively than man-made materials, our system minimises water use. We also carefully calibrate the irrigation system and factor in gravity to prevent flooding of lower modules.

    Flexible inner panel

As healthy plants grow, their roots move and change. The central panel of our living wall module uniquely supports this process, allowing roots to migrate, complete their life cycle, and regenerate soil substrate, as they would in nature.

Looking for a different type of vertical garden?

You may like our façade planters. With less wall coverage than our intensive green wall systems, they’re a smart alternative for certain projects.

    Frequently asked questions

Find answers to common questions about our outdoor living walls.
Still have questions? Reach out to our team.

How do living walls help projects comply with regulatory requirements?

Living walls can help new developments and retrofits meet Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG), Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method (BREEAM), and Urban Greening Factor (UGF) targets. The plants in living walls help improve air quality, capture carbon, cool the immediate atmosphere, and support wildlife, such as birds, bats, and pollinators.

How do you mitigate fire risks on living walls?

We perform regular maintenance to ensure the soil has consistent moisture and the plants are healthy. To further improve a living façade’s fire safety, we can also install on a calcium board and avoid dry grasses or plants rich in natural oils, such as lavender or rosemary. To learn more, view our Best Practice Guide for Living Walls and Fire Safety" on our technical resources page.

Can a living wall be fixed to any façade?

A green wall can be built upon almost any façade. We offer 5 types of build-ups, allowing us to install living walls on brick, concrete, steel frame, solid masonry, insulated cladding, ccv and interior structures. Our living walls can also be designed to be freestanding. Our consultants are happy to provide guidance to help you select the ideal build-up.

Can our building support the weight of an exterior green wall?

We advise on build-ups and handle weight calculations in an early feasibility study to design a façade that the building can easily support.

How long will the plants in a living wall last?

Plant lifespan depends on the species. Typically, we allow 3-5 years for herbaceous plants and 5-7 years for shrubs or plants with woodier stems.  Our maintenance contract covers plant replacement as needed.

Do you install living walls outside of the UK?

Yes. We’ve delivered projects across the world in vastly different climates, from Qatar to Sweden. We work with local partners to install and maintain our living wall system to our same high standard. Contact us to enquire about your region.

Does Viritopia provide other types of green walls?

As Viritopia focuses on natural solutions for the greatest environmental impact and value, we do not supply artificial green walls or hydroponic living wall systems. Sometimes we offer wires and climbers or hybrid façade planters when they’re a better choice for the building. Our consultants will help you select the best green wall option for your project.
