Designed by Atkins Global, the £23 million Charnock Bradley Building at the university's Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies provides a place at the heart of the university campus for staff, students, and businesses to share ideas, innovations and research. It is part of the University of Edinburgh's four-phase, 20-year development of the campus to establish it as a world-leading centre of excellence for animal science.
Sustainability was the key driver behind the design, with the cladding alternating between natural stone and living walls. Together, they create a unique identity for a building intended to serve as the hub of the campus.
All the sustainable architectural elements worked together to enable the building to achieve a BREEAM Excellent rating.
Able to aid in balancing the ratio of 'urban grey' to 'living green' as well as encouraging biodiversity, sought after green design features such as living walls offer a way of reducing the consequences of new construction on the surrounding environment.

Viritopia used a ranging plant palette to create a living wall that is not only beautiful, but helps to regulate temperatures and aid air purification.
