This case study demonstrates how living walls can help integrate data centres into their surrounding environment, enhancing biodiversity while softening the visual impact of critical infrastructure.
BACKGROUND
Greening a datacenter for a globally recognised multinational cloud computing platform
As demand for cloud computing and digital infrastructure continues to grow, integrating nature into data centre developments is becoming increasingly important. For this project, the living wall was incorporated as part of the planning strategy, helping the development respond positively to its surrounding environment. By combining biodiversity, rainwater reuse, urban cooling and architectural greening within a single building-integrated solution, the project demonstrates how critical infrastructure can deliver long-term environmental value while integrating more successfully with the landscape.
STRATEGY
Our turnkey solution
The project was delivered using Viritopia's modular polypropylene living wall system, with every module cultivated at our 10-acre plant nursery in Cavegates. Growing the planting in-house enabled us to maintain complete control over species selection, plant quality and establishment prior to installation.
From initial design consultation through to installation, the project was delivered by our in-house team, providing a seamless end-to-end service with clear communication, coordinated delivery and no scope gaps between design, production and construction.

Our horticultural expertise, built on more than 20 years of experience delivering living wall systems, enables us to refine every planting palette to the specific requirements of each project.
The planting palette has been selected to deliver resilient, year-round ecological performance suited to the environmental conditions of an Irish data centre. Approximately 60% of the species are evergreen, while pollinator-friendly species such as Lavandula angustifolia 'Munstead' and Thymus vulgaris provide valuable nectar throughout the growing season. Armeria maritima, native to the coasts of Britain and Ireland, has been chosen for its resilience to exposed conditions. Together, the planting enhances biodiversity, supports Biodiversity Net Gain objectives and creates a resilient green infrastructure asset that integrates the development with its surrounding landscape.
IMPACT
The living wall was designed to deliver benefits which include:
