Client Background

You don't get much greener in concept than a recycling centre. So when Ursvik Council appointed us to create a living wall to decorate the wall of the recycling facility, provide essential sound insulation and to achieve the necessary environmental credentials, it really reinforced that green message. We're really rather in awe of the way the centre works; forget recycling trucks, here the centre 'sucks' the recyclable materials straight from around 800 local houses via an underground vacuum system. Viritopia felt honoured to be part of such an advanced and futuristic sustainability system.

Trial wall

Due to the extreme weather conditions that Sweden experiences, there were a number of concerns raised about the long-term sustainability of a living wall on this scale. To ensure a successful plant palette, we installed a small trial wall on site for over a year.

A large selection of plants were trialled and the wall was closely monitored throughout the seasons to determine the qualities of each. A shortlist of 14 varieties were chosen for the green wall installation, including Alchemilla's, Briza's, Leucanthemum's and silene's.

Time to install

Our first class installation team comprised of 4 men, completed the first and second fix of this huge wall in under 2 weeks! The whole living wall design, delivery and installation process ran very smoothly and comments from the surrounding neighbours were extremely positive. A great result for both Viritopia and Sweden!
